Are you not sleeping well, either?

If you haven’t been sleeping very well lately, or you’ve been feeling ‘out-of-sorts’, irritable, even anxious…

Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Nearly everyone is being affected by the overall sense of unrest and disharmony on planet Earth. Between the global ‘pandemic’, the political unrest, the fear that has been spreading across the world, and the chaotic energies of the planetary alignments throughout December, January (and, heavy sigh, carrying into February) it’s been a rough ride…. especially for those who are sensitive, empathic and/or lightworkers.

I’ve certainly been experiencing it, and to be quite honest, it put me a rather frightful state for a time. I was questioning me, my life, my purpose. I was experiencing self-doubt, self-sabotage, my ‘old stuff’ coming up, all my ‘shadow sides’ showing themselves. It seemed I was being bombarded once again with everything I had ever questioned or avoided at any point in my life – but all at one time! It left me feeling very anxious and I went weeks without sleeping.

At first, I thought I was losing my mind, but then I started hearing similar stories from others who are following a Spiritual Path. My empathic friends confessed they were all feeling it, too. One said, “No one’s sleeping well these days!”

Of course, different people experience the unrest in different degrees. Think about your state of being over the last couple of months… have you been your best, your most joyful and content? Or have you been feeling a little challenged? Are you sleeping a little less? Experiencing a little uneasiness or irritability? Have you been saying you’re fine and unaffected by all this, because you don’t listen to the news or watch tv?

Honestly, how can anyone be unaffected? The energy is there and you can feel it, whether you are aware of it or not. And it will affect you. And if you’re not paying attention – like I wasn’t, because I was ‘too busy’ to slow down and pay attention (why on earth did I stop my daily meditation practice??) – the negative thinking and languaging can start to take over.

We’ll get through this. And we’ll get through it with greater ease and grace if we are diligent about a few things:

Pay attention to your thoughts and languaging. Are words like ‘can’t’, ‘never’, ‘always’, ‘afraid’ showing up? Say, ‘cancel that” and rephrase the thought or statement.

Take time to pause several times a day. Place your hand on your heart and breathe slowly and deep into your belly for at least three breaths.

Laugh every day. If there’s nothing funny to laugh at, fake laugh. Simply say, “hee hee hee hee, ha ha ha ha, ho ho ho ho” over and over for a couple of minutes. Fake laughter releases all the same feel good chemicals in the body as real laughter.

Get outside every day and pay attention to the sights, sounds, smells and feel of nature – even if it’s just to notice the snow on the tree in your backyard (if you’re in Canada, like I am) and listen to the sparrows chirping for a couple of minutes.

Listen to music you love every day and move your body. (I stopped dancing and I paid the price!)

Regular exercise improves sleep. Get physical doing something you enjoy doing, like walking, sports or dancing (see my invite below).

Try this breathing exercise, gifted to me by my friend, Brenda Forsey (whose music and images are on the Peace Experience page at ): Imagine you are breathing love into your heart for 3 or 4 counts, hold that breath for 3 or 4 counts and you imagine that love flowing out of your heart and sweeping through your entire body to clear out negative energy, slowly blow that negative energy out through your mouth for 6 to 8 counts, hold your breath for 2 counts to reset your cells, and repeat as many as 7 times.
